Would You Reach Out Directly to the Employer?

I have made some pretty stupid errors for someone who is actually making a career out of giving people job search advice. For example, when I was sure that I had found the perfect place for me and was so desperate to get it, I called the office numerous times and sent countless emails. I shouldn’t have been surprised, in retrospect, that I never heard back, but I was crushed at the moment.

Have you met before

I’m sure you’ve lost track of how many times you’ve seen job descriptions that reprimand applicants for even considering following up via phone or email on their application. You say to your machine, I get it. On the lease for my apartment, I swear that I will not, under any conditions, reach out after applying.

But the rules seem to be a little different when it comes to recruiting managers you’ve met before. That’s a clear sign that you have the green light to reach out if someone handed you a business card, or even casually mentioned that you should drop them a line.

We rejected a lot of perfectly good candidates when I was a recruiter, for reasons that were entirely out of our control. Some of them checked all of our boxes, but then we met someone who just knocked it even more out of the park.

Others were just so terrific that we realized we couldn’t afford them. I used to think we’d never hear from those fantastic candidates again, but when they reached out about potential positions, I heard a funny thing, and we always jumped for joy. But don’t be afraid to reach out before you apply if you see another position at their business that looks interesting. Many people would be glad to revisit your previous application at least. If you have the least supportive friends on the planet, we are willing to bet that when you’re job hunting, at least one of them has mentioned that you apply for an opening at their business. And generally, the suggestion leads you to ask two questions: What is this job? And do you really think that I’m a good match for the gig?
